CASTELLARO
and road to Pompeiana and Terzorio
OBSERVE THE LANDSCAPE
Castellaro is located at the edge of the mosaic of cultivated fields on a promontory, like Pompeiana and Terzorio, above the motorway. Looking up you can see the slopes, shaped by terraces, covered with olive groves of the Taggiasca olive, vineyards (of Moscatello and Vermentino) and strips of wood. Then the ridges discovered while below the articulated mosaic, with greenhouses and mixed crops, in the background of the sea.
From the square of the parish church there is a double view of the Taggia valley and the smaller valley of the Rio Merla, with the village of Pompeiana in sight, which invites you to walk along the beautiful stretch of road to Terzorio (village of the “tower houses”) . Between Pompeiana and Terzorio, along the paths that go up beyond the motorway, you can see walls, pillars, boxes and chapels of extensive terraced systems no longer cultivated.
ACTIVITIES
The villages of Castellaro, Pompeiana and Terzorio are connected by a network of paths, which can be traveled on foot and partly by mountain bike, (for example the “Beodo delle Chiuse”, an ancient irrigation canal in Pompeiana), with easy connections to the valley of the San Lorenzo, climbing the ridge. Interesting, from Terzorio, the path of the mines up to Monte Nero, with a breathtaking view.
Many local companies, in which the Taggiasca olive and the precious Moscatello di Taggia are grown, offer the opportunity to visit olive groves and vineyards and taste their products.
